Chapter 35

After my dinner with Paige, I had booked another appointment with Dr. Pritchard. If I was serious about staying away from Mark, I’d need the doctor’s help and advice.

“You recently lost your boyfriend in a car accident and now, you’re fixating on your friend’s new boyfriend − who’s clearly unattainable − in order to avoid getting hurt again.”

I stared at a spot on the floor.

“And when you find yourself obsessing over someone, it’s often because you have a low sense of self-worth,” the doctor said, in a quiet voice. “The solution for that is to focus on developing your own interests. Do things that make you feel good about yourself. Exercise. Start a new hobby. Take up a musical instrument. Or try ballroom dancing. And surround yourself with friends, who make you feel special and important.”

Friends? Like Paige and Fiona? And ballroom dancing required a partner…

“Family can also be a great support. And speaking of family, early events in our lives can often have a significant impact on our adult selves. I know that your father passed away two years ago, but I’d like you to go even further back this time, to your childhood and the loss of your brother.”

The old-style clock on the doctor’s desk ticked in the background.

My eyelids pulsed. “I don’t know if I can handle going back there.”

Dr. Pritchard leaned forward in her chair. “I really believe this will help you heal. Will you trust me?”

I clutched the arms of the chair, to steady my shaking hands. “I do wish I could remember more about him, but it was a long time ago.”

“Why don’t you close your eyes and relax?” Dr. Pritchard’s voice was gentle and soothing. “Breathe in and out. Feel yourself going down the escalator, down through the years and back to your childhood.”

The tension slowly left my body. I let my mind drift back in time, until I was my six-year-old self.

“Imagine yourself back in the house you grew up in. Find the door to your brother’s room. Open it up and describe what you see.”

I opened the door of my bedroom and traveled down a dark hallway to my brother’s room. An image of Gordie floated into my mind.

“I see my brother. He has chubby cheeks and bright, blue eyes that shine like glass marbles.”

“Very good, Erin. What else?”

“I feel something soft in my hands.”

“What is it? Can you describe it?”

I squeezed my eyes tighter. “It’s a blanket.” I leaned over the railing of Gordie’s crib and placed it over his head. No, no, no. That couldn’t be right. My breath came in pants, like a tongue depressor stick had been inserted into my mouth.

“Your eyelids are becoming lighter. You’re rising up the escalator.” The doctor’s voice pulled me back to the present.

I let out a long breath, like a deflating balloon. I heard a snap and my eyes popped open.

“What happened?”

“You became extremely agitated, so I brought you back. Did you see something that upset you?”

I stalled and took a sip of water, my eyes at half-mast.
